My grandfather Schmidt owned the hotel that was in this building, the Augustan Hotel for about a year in 1911. My father lived with my grandfather and grandmother in rooms in the hotel.
The hotel building was constructed in 1874 and named The Augustan by the owner, Augustan Smith. It remained a hotel until the 1970's when it closed and was bought by Scholet's Furniture which remains there to this day.
While Scholet's extensively renovated the building, they left the facade essentially unchanged. Inside, upstairs they left many of the original hotel rooms, using them as showrooms for their furniture.
I enjoyed wandering through a building my father and grandfather lived in over a century ago.
