The Ausable (or Au Sable, Sandy in French) River has two branches which together run for about 94 miles through the eastern Adirondacks, eventually draining into Lake Champlain.
After returning from Whiteface Mountain, I spent the late afternoon and my last entire day wandering around parts of the river valley. Like many streams in mountainous terrain, it has numerous waterfalls and gorges separated by ponds, dams and stretches of running water.
There are two "branches", the East and the West. I "scratched the surface" of both, one could spend weeks, months, or probably years without exploring the entire watershed.
