The next town south of Trinidad is Arcata, the home of Humboldt State University and the Humboldt State Calypso Band.
Professor Eugene Novotney is the Professor of Percussion there and the founder of the Calypso Band, a well regarded steelband. Eugene used to come to Trinidad (the one in the Caribbean) at Carnival to play with Phase II for Panorama, where I had come to know him. We regularly compared opinions on various aspects of the pan scene in Trinidad. Family and professional commitments have kept him away from Panorama for some years, but we have kept in touch sporadically. It was great to have brunch with him in Arcata.
