Panjumbie

Welcome to the Panjumbie.com Photo Gallery
My next stop was Crater Lake, Oregon.

Crater Lake is in the caldera of a volcano which blew up about 7700 years ago. It is the deepest lake in the United States.

The surface of the lake is some 6100 feet above sea level, and when I visited in early May, the surroundings were still covered with deep snow. The temperature was about 40 degrees F., a shock after the high 90's in the valleys earlier. As I was driving up the road into the park, the snow got deeper and deeper, and I feared the road would be closed before I got all the way to the lake. But, as you can see, the road was open. The hotel was still closed for the season, but the cleaning crews were preparing it for a spring opening.

Most of the visitors, me included, were not dressed for the cold and snow, but look at the woman in a couple of the photographs, shorts, short sleeves and flip-flops. She appeared to be quite comfortable, pointing out to me interesting sights as she was walking through the snow. Me, I was wearing a medium weight jacket, long pants but an old torn pair of now very wet sneakers and I was shivering. She must have antifreeze in her blood!
